Lorenz Architecture’s motorsports experience is vast. The design of race shops requires knowledge and a keen understanding of racing operations, fire protection systems, building codes, and interior architecture. The design of a motorsports facility is all about conveying the spirit of the team. This planned facility is a 120,000 square foot long span structure that has to comply with strict business park design standards.

As Lorenz Architecture continues to expand its presence in NASCAR, the Wood Brothers retained our services to design a new race shop and museum. The project required adapting an existing 150,000 SF building to handle all the tasks of managing a NASCAR Nextel Cup race team and accommodating tourists and fans who visit the shop. The results are a very functional space that allows fans of the Wood Brothers to see into the shop where some of the famous cars are kept on display while the day to day operations of the race team are unaffected.

This Race Shop, which is now home to Roberts Yates Racing was designed by Cary Gulf for EEL River Racing while a Project Architect at a previous firm.

The facility was designed to handle a multi-team operation for a NASCAR Nextel Cup raceteam. The facility included a chasis shop, body fabrication, finishing Fabrication, paint & decal shop, mechanical assembly, race prep, and a machining area. Outside of the facility a simulated pit row was constructed for the pit crew and driver to practice. In addition to the race car development spaces, the facility included the corporate offices of EEL River Racing. The corporate offices included executive offices, conference rooms, driver offices, and special work areas for the crew cheif and the pit crew.

This project is part of Cary Gulf’s personal experience
